Healing Myself

You’d think after the years I’ve been a chronic pain sufferer (migraines, endometriosis, PCOS, IBS….the list goes on…) I’d have started really digging into alternative therapies earlier.  Here’s the thing – alternative therapies and homeopathy are OUT THERE.  They’re out of common practice, out of the realm of coverage from your typical health insurance, out of understanding from many typical health care providers, and -the big one- OUT OF POCKET (code for often expensive).  Yet years passed (starting at age 11….I’ll let you infer how long that means the pain has been chronic 😉 ) and the more hopeless at a “cure” and the more discouraged I became with the cycle of pain, the less I delved into finding some other option.

I found myself in December of 2015 with a laundry list of allopathic daily medications (preventative measures) , a longer list of ablative medications (take this when the pain really kicks your behind), and a growing pile of emergency room bills when even those couldn’t cut the suffering.  It all became TOO much.  Too many pills.  Too many specialists.  Overwhelming.  My body was tired.  My mind, even more exhausted.  No one was taking seriously my concerns that side effects might be worsening my quality of life to a point that any minuscule benefit was being far outweighed.  So I cut myself off*. I researched how to slowly wean myself off all the artificial medications I’d become dependent upon.  My body quite literally went through weeks of HORRIBLE withdrawal (which brought me back to realizing the havoc all these drugs were culminating to wreak on my already sucky system.)  And so the healing began. To give you the quick and dirty version – our family almost immediately went Paleo because it was the simplest way to eliminate a number of things that were irritants for all of us (we may re-introduce sprouted grains and raw dairy at a later point once I feel like sufficient gut healing has occurred and see what happens).  I’ve begun to listen intently to my body, ditching traditional hormonal birth control and using the extremely focused Fertility Awareness Method (Taking Charge of Your Fertility, 20th Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health is the book you want if this is of interest for you!  Eliminating hormonal contraception has been vital to healing my migraines).  As I listen, I’ve been able to more clearly pin point nutritional deficiencies and areas whole foods and herbs can be beneficial where I would have once reached for a traditional western medicine.

And here I am, 6 months later.  Finally finding a new way.  The decision to pursue birth work and become board certified as a clinical herbalist didn’t come from a hippy dippy desire to commune with nature (though I’m certainly all for that!)  It came from what’s now rapidly approaching 2 decades of pain without real solutions.  With treatment, but not healing.  From feeling like my voice was not being heard and that I was never an equal partner in my model of care.  The meds are gone….and now the journey has really begun.  Finding REAL healing for myself, holistic methods for pain relief, balance with my autoimmunity and rebooting my family and I’s gut health from square one.  Diet is being changed, new herbal approaches to healing are being tested, books are being read by the stack-full.  And for the first time ever, I feel like I’ve found my voice in the story of ME and what my body really needs to heal.  To be my most vibrant self.

I can’t wait to see how things continue to change.  And I can’t WAIT to share with all of you so you too can take control, find your voice, and heal yourself.

*If you are currently taking any sort of daily medications to support health and well being, it is imperative you speak with a qualified health practitioner such as a MDDO, Naturopath, Homeopath, or licensed Ayeurvedic practitioner before tapering or eliminating these drugs.  Going “cold turkey” off many medications can cause seizures, extreme withdrawal symptoms, suicidal thoughts, or even death.
